Versus: Hardcore Dive Watches

Dive watches make up a large portion of watches available – here’s a comparison of two hardcore dive watches!

The Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M Co-Axial Chronometer 55 x 46 mm Seamaster (ref. 224.30.55.21.01.001) was originally released in 2009 as a refresh to the popular Seamaster Professional 600. At the core of this watch’s functionality is its water-resistance of 1200 meters, which is achieved via its helium escape valve, bezel security pusher, and screw-in crown. The watch also features an Omega caliber 8500 movement with 60 hours of power reserve and a Co-Axial escapement. Design-wise, the watch brandishes a distinctively wide look, with a 55 x 48 mm case diameter and 24 mm lug-to-lug thickness. This watch is certainly a powerhouse dive watch but currently sells at 38% below retail price.

On the other hand of the luxury dive watch market is the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea (ref. 126660). True to its name, this watch boasts incredible 3900-meter water resistance, thanks to its helium escape valve, screw-down case back, Triplock waterproofness system, and Ringlock System case architecture. Inside, it’s powered with an in-house caliber 3235 movement with 70 hours of power reserve with Paraflex shock absorbers. All of these features combine to an MSRP of $12,600, making it a very luxurious option for a divers watch and nearly $3,000 more expensive than the Omega Ploprof at retail. Although its market price is prone to fluctuations, it currently sells on the secondary market at 15% over MSRP, consistent with the appreciation of most other Rolex models.

Would you be willing to spend this much money on a dive watch? Which one of these luxury dive watches do you prefer?
